Can You Freeze Mozzarella Cheese?

Whether you have a surplus of mozzarella cheese or want to stock up for future use, freezing can be a convenient option.

Unfortunately, most mozzarella cheese has a high moisture content, making it unsuitable for freezing in most instances. To be clear, mozzarella is perfectly edible and still works well when used in dishes where the cheese is expected to melt, such as when it is used as a topping for pizza. As a fresh meal component, however – such as slicing it for use in a Caprese salad – leaves something to be desired. Post-thaw, the excess moisture locked within the cheese has an adverse effect on its otherwise famously silky texture.

To freeze mozzarella cheese, wrap it tightly in plastic wrap or place it in a freezer-safe container to prevent freezer burn.
