Can You Freeze Parmesan Cheese?

If you have an abundance of Parmesan cheese, you may wonder if it's possible to freeze it to extend its shelf life.

Parmesan is a hard cheese, which means it has a low moisture content. This makes it an ideal candidate for freezing. Placing it in a freezer set to around 0 degrees Fahrenheit helps keep it fresh for longer and ensures you'll have it ready to use whenever needed.

To freeze Parmesan cheese, it's best to wrap it tightly in plastic wrap or aluminum foil to protect it from freezer burn. For convenience, you can also shred or grate the cheese before freezing it. Either method will keep the cheese fresh for up to six months.

It’s usually a good idea to leave food at room temperature for the shortest time possible. With that in mind, thawing out the cheese in the refrigerator before use is preferable to leaving it on the counter.
